Often plagued with illness during his long life (1834-1921), Archbishop of Baltimore James Gibbons rose above his circumstances to become an important Baltimore icon of the Catholic faith.

The Union Memorial Hospital, Johnston Hospital and Nurses Home, Baltimore, MD

Founded by seven women, the Union Protestant Infirmary was established in 1854.  Renamed Union Memorial Hospital in 1920, it has become a premiere health provider in the Baltimore area.

Maryland Theatre and Hotel

The larger building to the right is the old "Hotel Kernan" named after James Lawrence Kernan, theatre manager and philanthropist.  It later became the "Congress Hotel". To the left is the old Maryland Theatre.

Sinai Hospital

The first name of this historic hospital was "Baltimore Asylum for Israelites" and was later called the "Hebrew Hospital of Baltimore". In 1959, this Jewish-sponsored teaching hospital moved to a brand new building in Northwest Baltimore.

Court House and Battle Monument

Finished in 1825, the Battle Monument commemorated The Battle of Baltimore, September 12-14, 1814 during the War of 1812. You'll find the monument replicated on both the city's seal and flag.

Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD

Opening on May 7, 1889 the Johns Hopkins Hospital was to be a place of care and healing for all people regardless of financial status, age, sex, or race. Although Hopkins died in 1873, his enduring vision for the hospital included its purpose as a teaching hospital closely related to a medical school.
