She had tea with the President's Wife!

Beautiful Real Photo Postcard looking toward Baltimore's Washington Monument. But what's really exciting to me in this card is the text on the back! This traveling woman shook hands with President Roosevelt and had tea with Eleanor Roosevelt!

Was "to" cool at Niagara Falls, so I took a flying trip to Baltimore. Went over to Washington and shook hands with the Pres. I wasn't in the receiving line but I had tea with the President's wife. After sending so many cards to you I think you should send a letter to me. Miriam

Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 (2 more)

Two more cards per the Baltimore Fire. The first one highlights the Continental Trust Building. Its fireproof construction material keep the outside structure intact, but inside all was incinerated.

The second card shows a beautiful sunny day contrasting to the devastation the fire left behind. This linked Pinterest board features an impressive collection of photos from the tragedy.

Great Baltimore Fire 1904

Color postcard showing the devastation from the Great Baltimore Fire. The conflagration highlighted the need for nationwide standards for hose couplings as other fire departments trying to help could not hook up to the Baltimore hydrants.

The Sun Office Baltimore

Didn't find much information on this one, but noting that it was from the Undivided Back Era, I believe this was the building where the Sunpaper moved to after the Great Baltimore Fire in 1904. The building was located on the southwestern corner of Baltimore and Charles streets.

Munsey Building and Battle Monument

Completed in 1911, the Munsey Building was named after the publisher Frank Munsey, and served as the offices for the Baltimore News. This newspaper eventually became the Baltimore News-American when purchased by William Randolph Hearst. Currently, the building is used for luxury condos and features a M&T Bank in the lower level.

Also see the Battle Monument commemorating the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The figure is a woman that represents the City of Baltimore and wears a crown of victory.

Introduction to my blog... The Basin from Federal Hill - Baltimore, MD

Updated Introduction: June 2021 - Recently retired. Finally have time to work on the "fun" things! These are some of my favorite vintage postcards, all per Baltimore, Maryland. I grew up in the area and have memories tied up with many of these locations. To me, each postcard is a precious piece of history, in particular, the cards that were actually sent. Where possible, I try to translate the old handwriting and provide the sender/recipient information as well. You may recognize the name of an old relative or family friend!

ENJOY!

I love this view of "The Basin from Federal Hill". Doesn't it look peaceful? How things have changed!
